Bed Frame Sizes for Singapore Mattresses: A Complete Guide

One of the most common mistakes Singapore homeowners make when furnishing a bedroom is buying the bed frame and the mattress separately โ€” at different times, from different shops, without checking whether the two actually match. The result is a mattress that overhangs the frame, or a frame with an awkward gap running along the sides. Neither is comfortable. Both are avoidable.

Singapore uses its own standard mattress sizing. These are not American sizes, and they are not identical to European sizes. A โ€œQueenโ€ mattress in Singapore measures 152cm by 190cm โ€” not the 153cm by 203cm you would find in a US catalogue. Before you choose a bed frame, understanding the four local sizes and how they translate to real bedroom dimensions is the foundation of every good decision.

This guide walks through each size, what it suits, and how to fit it into the most common bedroom types across Singapore.

What are the standard mattress and bed frame sizes in Singapore?

Singaporeโ€™s furniture industry has settled on four mattress sizes, each with a corresponding bed frame dimension. The frame typically adds between 5cm and 10cm to the mattress footprint on each side โ€” accounting for the frame rails, headboard thickness, and any storage drawer runners.

When planning your bedroom layout, always use the overall bed frame dimensions, not the mattress dimensions alone.

Single

Mattress size: 91cm ร— 190cm
Bed frame overall: Approximately 102cm ร— 200cm

Single is the standard size for a childโ€™s room, a guest room, or a study-bedroom in a 3-room HDB or smaller condo unit. A Single frame fits comfortably in a room of around 9 sqm, leaving space for a wardrobe and a small desk.

Super Single

Mattress size: 107cm ร— 190cm
Bed frame overall: Approximately 118cm ร— 200cm

Super Single is Singaporeโ€™s most practical solo-sleeper size. It is wider than a Single by roughly 16cm โ€” enough to make a meaningful difference if you move in your sleep. It is commonly chosen for HDB master bedrooms in 3-room and smaller 4-room flats where a Queen would leave little circulation space.

Queen

Mattress size: 152cm ร— 190cm
Bed frame overall: Approximately 163cm ร— 200cm

Queen is the most popular size for couples in Singapore. It fits comfortably in a standard HDB 4-room or 5-room master bedroom, typically with room for bedside tables on both sides if the room is at least 3.2 metres wide.

King

Mattress size: 182cm ร— 190cm
Bed frame overall: Approximately 193cm ร— 200cm

King is suited to larger master bedrooms in 5-room HDB flats, executive maisonettes, condos, and landed homes. A King frame in a room narrower than 3.8 metres will leave less than a metre of walking space on each side โ€” functional, but tight.

How do Singapore mattress sizes differ from international standards?

Singaporeโ€™s Queen mattress size, at 152cm ร— 190cm, is shorter in length than the US Queen, which is 153cm ร— 203cm, and slightly different in width too. Singaporeโ€™s King mattress size, at 182cm ร— 190cm, is narrower and shorter than the US King, which is 193cm ร— 203cm.

A frame built to US dimensions will have an obvious mattress gap if you place a locally sized mattress in it. The reverse โ€” a local frame with an international mattress โ€” can produce overhang.

European sizes differ further still. A European King is typically 160cm ร— 200cm, which does not correspond to any standard local frame.

The practical rule: always buy your frame and mattress from the same market, confirm dimensions before committing, and when in doubt, measure the mattress you plan to use before selecting a frame. Our mattress collection and bed frame collection are sized to match each other exactly โ€” a Queen mattress and a Queen frame here are built to the same 152cm ร— 190cm standard.

Which bed frame size suits your bedroom layout?

Room dimensions are more important than preference when it comes to choosing a size. Here is how the four sizes map to the most common bedroom configurations in Singapore.

3-room HDB master bedroom

A 3-room HDB master bedroom is usually around 10 to 11 sqm. A Queen frame is possible but will feel tight. Most couples here choose a Super Single and find it perfectly comfortable โ€” it leaves enough room for wardrobes and does not make the room feel like a corridor.

If the room is squarer rather than rectangular, a Queen can work with careful placement.

4-room HDB master bedroom

A 4-room HDB master bedroom is usually around 12 to 13 sqm. This is the standard environment for a Queen frame.

With a room width of around 3.2 to 3.5 metres, a Queen frame typically allows 50cm to 60cm of space on each side โ€” enough for a bedside table and comfortable movement. This is the most common bedroom-and-frame pairing we help couples configure in our showroom.

5-room HDB or executive maisonette master bedroom

A 5-room HDB or executive maisonette master bedroom is usually around 14 to 17 sqm. A King frame becomes viable here.

In a 5-room master bedroom of around 3.8 metres in width, a 193cm-wide King frame leaves approximately 40cm to 45cm on each side โ€” enough to move comfortably, though not spaciously. If the room is 4 metres wide or more, a King frame fits without compromise.

Condo master bedroom

Condo bedroom dimensions vary considerably by development and era. Pre-2000 condos tend to have more generous bedrooms; newer launches are often tighter.

Always measure your specific room before assuming a King will fit. A floor plan marked โ€œmaster bedroomโ€ does not guarantee a King-friendly layout.

Childrenโ€™s rooms and secondary bedrooms

A Single frame is the practical choice for a childโ€™s room of 8 to 10 sqm, leaving floor space for a study area. A Super Single in the same space works well for a teenager or a regular adult guest room.

What else affects the effective size of your bed frame?

Two factors that buyers often overlook are storage drawers and headboard projection.

Storage drawer clearance

Many bed frames in Singapore come with underbed storage drawers โ€” a practical feature given the storage constraints of HDB living. Drawers that pull out from the side require clearance space equal to the drawer depth, typically 45cm to 60cm on the drawer side.

If your room is tight, choose a frame with foot-end drawers or hydraulic lift storage, both of which require no side clearance.

Headboard thickness

Headboards vary in thickness from around 8cm for a simple panel design to 25cm to 30cm for a cushioned upholstered headboard.

If your frame sits against a wall, a thick cushioned headboard eats into your effective room length. In a room where length is tight โ€” common in HDB layouts where the bed runs along the shorter wall โ€” a slimmer headboard can recover meaningful floor space.

Bed height

Bed height is the third consideration, particularly for elderly family members or young children. Most standard frames sit at around 45cm to 55cm from floor to mattress top.

Lower platform frames can sit at 35cm to 40cm, which suits certain sleeping preferences but can make getting up harder for older users.

How to measure your bedroom before choosing a frame

Take these five measurements before visiting any showroom or browsing online:

  1. Room length and width โ€” measure the full internal dimensions, wall to wall
  2. Door swing clearance โ€” note where the door opens and ensure the frame will not obstruct it
  3. Window positions โ€” a frame placed directly under a window is not ideal for long-term sleep quality; leave at least 30cm clearance
  4. Air-conditioning unit placement โ€” in Singapore homes, the aircon unit direction matters; cold air blowing directly onto a sleeper can disrupt sleep over time
  5. Existing wardrobe or built-in depth โ€” built-in wardrobes in HDB flats are typically 60cm deep; factor this into the remaining room width

Sketch a rough floor plan on paper or use a free room-planning tool. Place the bed frame rectangle first โ€” it is the largest piece in the room and everything else organises around it.

If you would like a second opinion on fit before committing, bring your floor plan to our showroom at 5 Ubi Link. Our showroom team works through bedroom layouts regularly and can point out clearance issues that are easy to miss on paper. We are open daily from 11:30 AM to 9 PM, including weekends and public holidays โ€” no appointment needed.

Getting size and frame right together

Choosing the right bed frame size is really two decisions sitting together: the size that fits your mattress, and the frame configuration that fits your room. Get the dimensions right first, then look at style, material, storage options, and height.

Rated 4.8 by 2,733+ verified Google reviews from Singapore homeowners, our team has helped furnish bedrooms across 3-room flats, 5-room HDB homes, condominiums, and landed properties. The questions are almost always the same โ€” and the answers almost always come back to measuring carefully before deciding.
